uFederal Regulators Still Objecting To Marriage Of Staples And Office Depotr

  • (Mike Mozart) (frankieleon)
Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission went to court in an effort to block the pending merger of office-supply mega chains Staples and Office Depot, saying that it would result in too little competition in the market for supplies being sold to businesses. Since then, Staples has tried to revise the deal to make it more palatable, but to no avail.

Staples revealed this morning that its revised plan, which would have involved divesting up to $1.25 billion of commercial contracts, was rejected by the FTC and that the regulator did not reply with a counteroffer.

“The company is still willing to continue negotiations with the FTC to reach a settlement that addresses FTC concerns,” reads a statement from Staples.

At the core of the FTC’s concerns about the $6.3 billion merger is the effect it would have on the market for large businesses to purchase necessary office supplies. Because Staples – the nation’s largest seller of office products and services – and Office Depot are each other’s closest competitors in this arena, the agency believes that the proposed merger would “eliminate beneficial competition that large companies rely on to reduce the costs of office supplies.”

This is the second time that Staples and Office Depot have tried to merge. Back in 1997, when people still went to bricks-and-mortar stores to make most purchases, the FTC successfully sued to block the marriage from getting to the altar.

uMartin Shkreli Terminated From Another CEO Gig Following Fraud Chargesr

  • (Freaktography)

Things continue to unravel for Martin Shkreli, best known as the guy whose company bought the rights to a previously affordable, life-saving generic drug, then increased its price by 5,400% overnight. After being arrested last week in an unrelated securities-fraud investigation, the “pharma bro” has lost his spanking-new job as CEO of KaloBios Pharmaceuticals.

Shkreli’s termination from San Francisco-based KaloBios, which has a current focus on developing treatments for cancer patients, comes just a month after he was appointed to the company’s top seat. Shkreli has also resigned his seat on the KaloBios board.

In November, Shkreli acquired 70% of KaloBios after he and a group of investors committed to an equity investment of at least $3 million, as well as a commitment of $10 million toward an equity financing facility, the company said at the time.

On Monday, KaloBios said that Tony Chase, who joined the board at the same time as Shkreli, resigned from his position as a member of the board of directors. The company, which said the termination was effective Dec. 17, did not name an interim leader.

Shkreli is best known as the guy whose other company, Turing Pharmaceuticals, bought the rights to Daraprim. The drug, an anti-parasitic used to treat malaria and toxoplasmosis, had long been available as a generic for only around $1 per pill. A recent acquisition of the product resulted in a rate hike to $13.50/pill, but immediately after Turing purchased the rights to Daraprim, the per-pill price soared to $750.

Shkreli now faces charges related to his time running a hedge fund and working at a company called Retrophin.

On Thursday, he was charged with illegally taking stock from Retrophin, a company he started in 2011, and using it to pay off debts from unrelated business dealings. He pleaded not guilty to the charges of securities fraud and was released on $5 million bail.

A day later, Turing announced that Shkreli had resigned from his post at that company. Chairman Ron Tilles will fill the role of interim chief. The New York Times pointed out at the time that Tilles was a founder and worked in business development at Retrophin.

uUnited Airlines Bringing 200 Comfort Dogs To Seven Airports For A Bit Of Holiday Travel Stress-Reliefr

  • These pups aren't part of United Paws, but they'd still relieve holiday stress. (Hammerin Man)

With holiday travel predicted to reach record levels this week, it’s probably a safe bet that someone at some overcrowded airport across the country will get a bit stressed out. In a bid to make sure holiday travel is a bit less grueling for passengers, United Airlines is sending in the dogs, literally.

United Airlines announced Monday that it plans to send 200 dogs to the airline’s seven airport hubs this week through a program called United Paws.

The specially trained “comfort dogs” will be led around terminals with the express purpose of bringing a bit of cheer to the holiday travel experience.

Under the program, which will run from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Wednesday this week in Los Angeles, Cleveland, Denver, Newark, Washington, Houston, and Chicago, passengers can scratch, pet, and otherwise love on the furry airline ambassadors.

“Research shows that just petting a dog releases oxytocin, the hormone associated with bonding and affection, and also decreases levels of stress, helps us breathe easier and lowers our blood pressure,” the airline said in a statement.

The airline first started the holiday pet stress-relief strategy in one or two airports last year. The Los Angeles Times reports that LAX, which will have 13 United pups on hand this week, has a similar program year-round called Pets Unstressing Passengers.

uFIFA Chief Sepp Blatter Banned Over $2M Payment To Fellow Soccer Execr

4 4 4 9
  • blatterMore than six months after he announced he would eventually be ending his nearly two-decade reign atop the world’s largest soccer organization, FIFA president Sepp Blatter has been banned from the sport for eight years.

This morning, FIFA’s Ethics Committee, which has been investigating allegations of bribery and corruption at the highest level of the heavily criticized organization behind the Wold Cup and many other major international soccer events, announced that the ban is effective immediately.

Blatter, who had been reelected as FIFA president only days before declaring his intention to leave the office, was targeted by investigators over a The proceedings against Mr Blatter primarily related to Feb. 2011 to Michel Platini, FIFA VP and President of UEFA. Platini, who has acknowledged the payment but denied any corruption, has also been suspended for eight years by FIFA.

FIFA says there was no indication that Platini received the money for any “execution or omission of an official act.” Platini had claimed that the payments were for advisory work he’d provided to FIFA as far back as 1998, when Blatter ascended to the presidency. And in fact, there is a 1999 written agreement regarding this transaction. However, FIFA says that this document “had no legal basis.” The organization was similarly unconvinced by claims of a gentleman’s oral agreement between Blatter, who authorized the payment, and Platini.

“By failing to place FIFA’s interests first and abstain from doing anything which could be contrary to FIFA’s interests, Mr Blatter violated his fiduciary duty to FIFA,” reads a statement from the organization. “Mr Blatter’s actions did not show commitment to an ethical attitude, failing to respect all applicable laws and regulations as well as FIFA’s regulatory framework to the extent applicable to him and demonstrating an abusive execution of his position as President of FIFA.”

Both men say they plan to appeal their suspensions.

Blatter has been under fire at FIFA since almost the beginning of his presidency. In 2002, others in the organization accused him in court of misusing FIFA funds and mismanaging its finances. Questions of bribery have surrounded the upcoming World Cups in Russia and Qatar.

The latter host country has been particularly problematic for FIFA following reports of large numbers of deaths and injuries at construction sites for the event, along with repeated allegations of human rights violations.

Several of FIFA’s major World Cup sponsors, have been pressured to use their leverage to drive Blatter out and force change at the organization. Most famously, John Oliver pledged to eat everything off the McDonald’s menu and drink a Bud Light Lime if these companies could bring about the end of the Blatter era. When it happened… he did.

In October, amid increasing legal scrutiny for Blatter, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Visa, and Budweiser each called for the president to step down. Blatter refused, but was subsequently suspended.

In an act of hubris that hasn’t helped Blatter, FIFA produced a $30 million hagiographic film about its president and all the wonderful things he’s done for soccer. Somehow, it managed to earn a whopping $918 in its opening weekend, making it the worst box office opening ever in the U.S.

uSeasonal Bags Of Dove Chocolate Recalled Due To Surprise Snickers, Allergy Concernsr

4 4 4 9
  • dove_frontFood allergies can be a life-threatening condition, which is why the maker of Dove candies has recalled a winter-themed assortment of chocolates available only from one nationwide food retailer and distributed to 35 states. Which nationwide food retailer is that? Mars didn’t bother to include that information, which might have been helpful.

Still, if you purchased this bag, you’ll recognize it, since the bag and the candies themselves are different shapes than most Dove products. The product in question is a 24-ounce bag, which the company warns may contain pieces from their other candy lines. You could find a Snickers, Milky Way, or Twix inside.

Those candy bars include ingredients like peanuts, eggs, and wheat that aren’t found in the Dove chocolates, and wouldn’t be listed on the label on the outside of the bag.

Affected bags were sold at the Mystery Retailer between September 19 and December 1 of this year. If you have one and someone in your household is allergic to peanuts, wheat, or eggs, return it to the store where you purchased it. If no one would be harmed, it’s okay to keep the bag, and you can just think of the possibility of receiving a piece of Snickers, as one consumer reported, as an exciting possible bonus.

If you have questions or concerns about the recall, contact the hotline at 1-800-551-0907.

uHave You Stayed Current On Your Dishwasher-Loading Methods?r

4 4 4 9
  • (Anne Makaske)
We’ve long emphasized the importance of not pre-rinsing dishes for your newer dishwasher, since modern appliances now assume that you don’t. What else has changed since you first learned how to line up plates facing the water jets and place knives facing down in the basket? A surprising amount, actually.

The dishwasher experts down the hall from us at Consumer Reports know how to load the appliances: for them, testing dishwashers means scientific rigor and careful loading. Here are some highlights from their recommendations for modern appliances. You can find the rest of their dishwasher loading advice over at their site. They also have suggestions about the best detergents to use when you’re cleaning up after a large holiday gathering.

    • Read the manual for tips specific to your dishwasher’s model. Really, this is important, since the setup of racks and location of water jets differs across brands and models.
    • Glasses go on the prongs, which tilts them at an angle and keeps water out of many glasses with concave bases.
    • Scrape big food chunks off, but don’t pre-rinse.
    • Instead of pre-rinsing, run the water in your kitchen faucet until it becomes hot before starting the dishwasher, to make sure the water doesn’t start flowing in while cold.
    • Put the heaviest and most soiled items on the bottom rack, keeping them in range of the spray arm. Arrange pots, pans, and plates however your dishwasher’s manual tells you to. If you’re a renter and don’t have the manual, you may be able to find it on the manufacturer’s website, or from a third party somewhere online.

uGift-Wrap Shrink Ray: Walmart’s Labels Are A Little Smallerr

4 4 4 9
  • walmart_labelsIt’s not just food that the Grocery Shrink Ray hits: we’ve seen it strike everything from grooming products to warranties. We haven’t ever seen a Christmas label shrink ray, though, until Dave sent these pictures comparing labels purchased at Walmart during different years.

“Thought the new ones had less room to write on!” he wrote. Both of these are packages of 100 labels for $1.99, and the newer one on the left definitely gives users a little bit less room to write on. The older package seems significantly larger because the cardboard backing is so much bigger, but the labels still shrank.
