uBarbie’s Feet Finally Get A Break As New Range Of Dolls Can Wear Flatsr

4 4 4 9
  • mattelflatfeetBarbie has spent her entire life standing on her tiptoes and boy, she must be tired. Too long has she toiled for hours in dream mansions and in ice cream shoppes without the benefit of having her feet flat on the ground, encased comfortably in flat shoes. Her time has come: Mattel’s newest line of dolls have adjustable ankles, and a line of flat footwear to go with that new flexibility.

After more than half a century of having her dogs constantly barking, Barbie can now eschew the heels and opt for flats for the first time ever.

Mattel says its new Fashionistas line represents “the world girls see around them,” and includes 23 dolls with 14 different faces, eight skin tones, 18 eye colors, 22 hair styles and 23 hair colors, along with those adjustable ankles, a spokesperson for the company told Buzzfeed, with fashions that “reflect authentic street style” as part of the “continued evolution of the Barbie brand.”

Translation: Not everyone on the street is tottering around on sky-high spikes like baby giraffes.

I remember putting flat (likely off-brand) shoes on my Barbie, only to be stymied by her feet’s refusal to bend. Instead she just sort of tiptoed around in plastic sneakers. But now, freedom. Freedom to fake walk, fake run and stand (with assistance). Enjoy it Barbie. You’ll never want to put those heels on again.

uFrom Pac-Man To Pong, Tetris To Super Mario Bros.: Video Game Hall Of Fame Welcomes Its Inaugural Classr

4 4 4 9
  • From a white ball bouncing back and forth on a screen to a duo of plumber brothers, the history of video games has been relatively short but packed with a wide array of gaming experiences. To honor some of the first greats, the World Video Game Hall of Fame has inducted its inaugural class, including Pong and Super Mario Bros. on the list, among others.

Joining those old favorites in the first-ever class of hall of famers are other vintage games like Pac-Man and Tetris (and now the song is in your head), along with newer games DOOM and World of Warcraft.

The WVGHOF opened its doors just last February at the Strong Museum in Rochester, N.Y. The nomination period for any electronic game — whether arcade, mobile or console — lasting through the end of March.

Games were chosen by a global committee made of almost two dozen game historians, journalists and professors, reports the Wall Street Journal, with the museum’s staff winnowing down March’s picks to 15 finalists. Oldies like The Legend of Zelda and Space Invaders joined newer fare like Angry Birds and Minecraft on the list of finalists, but only six could prevail as inductees.

Choosing inductees was “tough because all the nominees are important and influential games,” selection-committee member Ian Bogost, a game developer and professor at Georgia Tech’s Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts told the WSJ. “We didn’t have a ton of time,” he says, adding that he’s pleased regardless with the picks.

The inaugural class will go on display at Strong’s eGamesRevolution exhibit.

uBat Bites Person At New Mexico Walmart, Tests Positive For Rabiesr

4 4 4 9
  • You can find just about anything at a Walmart Supercenter – even rabid bats, apparently. Or at least that was the case at an Albuquerque store earlier this week.

KRWG in New Mexico reports that state health officials confirmed a bat that bit a person at a local Walmart store has tested positive for rabies.

The ordeal began around 9 a.m. on Tuesday when the mammal was found hanging upside-down from the basket of a motorized scooter being used by a customer at the checkout counter.

Another person who attempted to help remove the bat from the cart was bitten. It wasn’t specified if that person was a customer or an employee of the store.

The New Mexico Department of Health tells KRWG that the individual who was bitten will receive a series of vaccinations to prevent them from developing rabies.

“We would like anyone who may have touched this bat or handled it in any way to give us a call so we can interview them for possible exposure to rabies,” Department of Health Cabinet Secretary Retta Ward, said. “Just being near or in the vicinity of the bat is not an exposure.”

uCarnival Introduces Cruises That Include Three-Day Volunteering Opportunity For Passengersr

4 4 4 9
  • carnivalsunshineHave you ever experienced competing desires to lounge on a cruise ship but also help others in need? On the off-chance that you have, Carnival wants to present a solution: its new Fathom cruises.

Reuters reports that the cruise line is attempting to tap into the philanthropic side of consumers with a week-long social impact trip that includes three days of organized humanitarian work in the Dominican Republic.

Carnival says it expects 40% of the passengers on the 710 passenger ship Adonia to be new to the company and the world of volunteering.

“They’ve maybe written a lot of checks in the past and are tired of writing a check to do good,” Tara Russell, president of the new brand, tells Reuters of potential passengers. “They want to do something more and yet they don’t really know where to begin.”

The trips – departing bi-weekly from Port of Miami starting in 2016 – will start at $1,540 per person and include the cost of volunteer supplies.

Fathom cruises won’t have the traditional casino or Broadway-style aspects that many mega-ships offer. Instead, passengers will be offered training and education in preparation for their volunteer work, Reuters reports.

Carnival says it worked with Dominican social service agencies to create the program, enabling participants to do productive work with little previous experience or time in the country.

Passengers can expect to spend the three days in the Dominican Republic in the Puerto Plata region helping to cultivate cacao plants and organic fertilizer at a woman’s cooperative, working with English-language learners or helping in the production of clay water filters.

Those who don’t want to spend their entire time in the Dominican volunteering have the option to engage in typical tourist excursions at Carnival’s soon-to-open Amber Cove cruise center.

While passengers’ and the Carnival’s hearts are likely in the right place, some in the volunteer world feel that the new for-profit venture could prove problematic, Reuters reports.

Gawain Kripke, policy director for Oxfam America – a nonprofit relief organization based in Boston – says such short-term volunteers typically perform low value work, even if they are moved by the experience.

uIt’s National Doughnut Day: Here’s Where To Get Free Doughnutsr

4 4 4 9
  • If you woke up this morning not realizing you’ve got an excuse to eat doughnuts (or donuts) all day long, let us provide you with some exciting news: Today is National Doughnut Day, which clearly means it is your prerogative to dump fried dough down your gullet all day. Also, it’s Friday, so double reason. But where to score the free dough, that is the question.

Free is a bit of a stretch at Dunkin’ Donuts today, as the chain is offering a free doughnut of your choice (while supplies last) with the purchase of any beverage. You don’t have to try to head there early either, the offer is good all day June 5 at participating locations nationwide.

Competitor Krispy Kreme is offering one free — yes, totally free! — doughnut per guest today, with no purchase required. Unless you live in Connecticut, where apparently the doughnut is not revered as the blessed, doughy being that it is.

Participating Winn-Dixie grocery stores are offering one free powdered sugar donut hole today in their in-store bakeries, with a limit of one and only one hole per customer.

Tim Hortons is giving away a free doughnut with any purchase for customers that print or show their National Doughnut Day Offer from the company Facebook page, available all day.

Honey Dew Donuts is handing out one free Mocha Madness doughnut with the purchase of any medium drink at participating locations, all day.

Cumberland Farms will bestow one free doughnut with the purchase of a hot or iced coffee or Chill Zone beverage — but only between the hours of 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. so you better hurry if you’re reading this on the East Coast.

While it’s not a store, Entenmann’s is giving away a chance for 100 people to win a year’s supply of Entenmann’s donuts, and will donate $1 to the Salvation Army up to $30,000 for every entrant.

Why the Salvation Army? National Doughnut day was first celebrated on 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I, and is traditionally celebrated on the first day of June.

And if chains aren’t your style but you’ve got a local baker or doughnut shop near you, you might want to swing by or call, as they could have specials and freebies going on today as well.
