jikMan Buys Bag Of Potato Chips, Finds Whole Potato In Bagde

4 4 4 4

chipsWhile kits that encourage a do-it-yourself spirit are great, that isn’t what people expect when they buy a bag of potato chips. That’s why a man in England was surprised when he opened up his snack and discovered a ‘tater in its unprocessed form. Delicious? Sure. A convenient snack? Not so much.

Mistakes happen, but this is an especially hilarious one. The chips were steak and onion flavored, so perhaps it’s lucky that he didn’t find a whole unpeeled onion inside. Or a cow, if it had been a significantly larger bag.

The customer says that he wasn’t really paying attention before opening the bag, thinking that maybe the lump was just a cluster of “soggy crisps.” He bought the bag from international discount grocery powerhouse Aldi, but he has no plans to stop shopping there. “It is likely I will buy them again, brand doesn’t bother me with crisps,” he told British Telecom news. “But I will feel up the pack before I open them.” Checking the contents of opaque packages is a pretty good idea when it’s possible, when you consider the possibilities of moldy drink packets or ravioli mold.

jikNYC Lawmakers Want To Pay People For Submitting Videos Of Illegally Idling Vehiclesde

Getting paid to spy for your government isn’t just something for the movies: In New York City, lawmakers are introducing a bill that would reward citizens who report drivers of idling vehicles and submit a video of the act as proof.

Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal is behind the bill, and says it’s the way to go in because the laws right now against environmentally dangerous idling aren’t usually enforced, reports the New York Daily News. It’s illegal to let a vehicle run for more than three minutes, or for more than one minute near schools, with a fine of $350.

“The enforcement is so terrible,” she said. “The health impact of idling cars is bad. (It contributes to) asthma, heart disease, cancer.”

This new bill would not only get a hike to $1,500 — with first-time offenders going free with a warning — but would pay residents to alert the Department of Environmental Protection, up to half the summons amount.

But before submitting complaints, citizens would have to take a DEP training class and identify themselves when turning in videos showing the motorist’s license plate.

Won’t this just set all the curtains in the neighborhood a-twitching with domestic spies? No, Rosenthal says, as all drivers have to do to stay out of trouble is follow the law.

“The point is, it’s illegal,” she said. “This is about people who are really frustrated that we’re not enforcing the law, and this is a solution.”

jikStarbucks Mobile Ordering Expands To Washington And Idahode

28a26a57e8df479eabb562ff5b35114dIf you’re dreaming of the day that you can order and pay for your Starbucks beverage with no human interaction whatsoever, you’re apparently not alone. Customers have been asking for the ability to order in advance from the mobile app for as long as Starbucks has had a mobile payment app, and the test is expanding from just one city to two states. Starbucks says that it should go national later this year.

Since December, Starbucks has been testing the service, but it has only been available to iPhone users in Portland, Oregon. A week from today, it’s expanding to corporate-owned stores, but only in Washington state and Idaho. No, Starbucks didn’t originally test the program in its home city of Seattle.

This launch has answered some of the questions that we had about the mobile ordering app a year ago when it was announced: the device will count down when your beverage is due to the minute, a handy service if you’re pressed for time. We don’t know whether you get to jump the line again if something is wrong and your beverage has to be remade. As far as dealing with other customers in line who are jealous? You’re on your own for that, too.

jikBurger King Quietly Dropped Soda From Kids Mealsde

4 4 4 4

When Wendy’s decided it January to remove soft drinks from its kids meals, it meant that Burger King was the only one of the big three burger chains to still include soda with their youth-targeted menu. But in the last month, BK has quietly pulled the sugary beverages from its kids meals and menu boards.

The fast food chain confirmed the decision to USA Today, saying the change is “part of our ongoing effort to offer our guests options that match lifestyle needs.”

The listed menu options for kids meal beverages are now mil, apple juice, or chocolate milk, but a kid customer can still request a soda if they really want it.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, which has long pushed for the big burger chains to reform their kids menus, called BK’s decision a “responsible step forward.”

“Soda and other sugary drinks promote diabetes, tooth decay, obesity, and even heart disease—and have no place on menus meant for little kids,” CSPI Nutrition Policy Director Margo G. Wootan explains in a statement. “Restaurant chains that market soda as part of their children’s meals are making life harder for parents, most of whom want to reserve soda as a special, occasional treat if they allow it at all.”

jikStudent Aid Bill Of Rights Aims To Overhaul Federal Student Loan Repayment, Servicing Processde

4 4 4 4

The way in which borrowers pay back their federal student loans – from checking the balance to filing complaints against servicers – is set to change with the signing of a presidential memorandum Tuesday.

The Washington Post reports that President Obama is expected to continue promoting college access and affordability by directing federal agencies to overhaul government funded student loans.

With student loan debt now averaging $29,000 for borrowers leaving school with a Bachelor’s degree, the so-called Student Aid Bill of Rights aims to streamline the process of paying and managing federal student loan debts.

“All borrowers should be able to rely on a system in which servicers, schools and the government provide information and resource to help them manage their loans successfully,” Education Treasury Deputy Sarah Bloom Raskin tells the Post. “The steps that the president is announcing is going to refocus our system on borrowers.”

Specifically, the memorandum will establish two centralized websites allowing borrowers to view their loan information more easily, while creating mandates for servicers to more clearly disclose changes to the debt and provide fair, affordable payment requirements.

The first site, which will be created by the Dept. of Education by July 2016, focuses on giving borrowers a simple way to file complaints and feedback about federal student lenders, servicers, collection agencies and schools.

The second site will function as a centralized portal establishing an access point for all borrowers to check their balances and make payments, no matter what company services their loans.

As part of the site, loan servicers will be required to provide clear disclosures notifying borrowers when loans are transferred from one servicer to another, as well as how borrowers can change repayment plans if desired.

Additionally, the new portal includes requirements to ensure that borrowers’ payments are applied fairly. Servicers must now automatically apply prepayments to loans with the highest interest rates unless borrowers direct them otherwise, the Post reports.

The President’s Student Loan Bill of Rights is similar to the Student Loan Borrower’s Bill of Rights legislation Illinois Senator Dick Durbin introduced last year.

“Today’s announcement is a clear indication of President Obama’s commitment to student borrowers – it is a commitment that we share,” Durbin said in a statement.

While the Senator commended the White House’s latest student loan actions, he said it doesn’t excuse Congress from taking additional steps to protect all private and federal student loan borrowers.

In fact, Durbin plans to introduce the Fairness for Struggling Students Act that aims to once again allow private student loan debt to be discharged in bankruptcy.

jikUSPS Apologizes To Deaf Woman After She Says Worker Refused To Communicate With Her By Writingde

The United States Postal Service is apologizing to a deaf woman in Florida after she said workers at her local post office refused to accommodate her by providing service through writing, instead allegedly mocking her and making her feel humiliated.

The woman — who is deaf but can speak, as she became deaf as a young adult — told WKMG News that she had asked a clerk to help her mail some packages, and had requested she respond to her questions via writing.

“She became agitated when I informed her I am deaf and need her to write down the answer to my question,” said the woman.

She says that although she explained numerous times to the worker that she’s deaf and couldn’t hear her responses, by pointing to a piece of paper, instead the worker allegedly mocked her by pointing at the paper and speaking out loud again.

“I asked for a supervisor. She became angry and pointed that I had to go away from her section of the counter,” she told the station.

When she confronted a supervisor about the denial of service and the poor training of the staff, she says another worker handed her a note reading, “Call your congressman who do not have to write down for you. It’s not the law!! Get an interpreter.”

She says she was then asked to leave, as the final piece in an experience she called “humiliating and degrading.”

“Honestly, I cried in the car. People like that make you feel like garbage,” she told the news station.

In fact, under the Americans with Disabilities Act, it’s not up to the deaf person to provide the means of communication, Lynn Sinnott, executive director of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services pointed out to WKMG.

“She was asking for a very reasonable accommodation which was to write back and forth,” she said. “It’s actually inappropriate to ask a deaf person to provide an interpreter. They are not, according to the ADA, required to provide the interpreter. It is those individuals that they are doing business with. It is their responsibility to provide the accommodations.”

In response to the backlash online and in the media, a representative from the USPS issued a statement including an apology:

“The Postal Service extends its sincere apologies to our customer for this incident.

The Postal Service does not condone the type of exchange that occurred here. Rather, the Postal Service’s expectation is that all customers will be treated with dignity and respect and receive courteous and helpful service from our employees. This expectation includes the provision of prompt and courteous service by postal employees to customers who may have language barriers, hearing impairments, visual impairments or other physical or mental impairments. Postal Service management has investigated and remediated the situation.”

jikAmid Passenger Safety Concerns, Uber Promises To Hire 1 Million Women Drivers By 2020de

4 4 4 4

uberwomen While ridesharing service Uber has fans glad to new options for getting around town, headlines about drivers allegedly assaulting and harassing female passengers continues to cast a pall over Uber’s reputation. So today the company announced a plan to hire 1 million female drivers worldwide over the next five years.

The plan was announced as a partnership with the United Nations’ UN Women group.

“We intend to invest in long-term programs in local communities where we live and work, as Uber commits to creating 1 million jobs for women globally on the Uber platform by 2020,” reads a joint statement from UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and Uber CEO Travis Kalanick. “This important mission can only be accomplished when all women have direct access to safe and equitable earning opportunities.”

The company didn’t provide specifics on its current level of female drivers, but did tell Reuters that around 22,000 of Uber’s 160,000 U.S. drivers are women.

Uber believes that its service offers schedule flexibility and may be a good fit for working mothers.

“Uber does not require (minimum) hours, and it does not require a schedule,” the company’s general counsel explains to Reuters. “It offers the chance to be entrepreneurial, the chance to balance work and family.”

The service has been criticized for not doing enough to vet its drivers before hiring and not being responsive to complaints from female passengers.

Like the London woman who says her driver kept propositioning her for oral sex. While the driver is apparently no longer working for Uber, the most the company would ever tell this passenger was that it was looking into the matter.

In two recent incidents in Chicago, drivers allegedly crossed the line from verbal harassment into actual assault. One driver has been charged with criminal sexual assault, unlawful restraint and kidnapping for allegedly exposing himself to a male passenger before choking the man and trying to force him into performing oral sex on him. Police accused a second driver — who was actually illegally using his wife’s Uber account to pick up passengers — of assaulting a sleeping female passenger in his car and then again in his home.

In response to those claims, Uber recently announced it would add a panic button to the app in Chicago.

Then there was the Florida woman who says her Uber driver groped her. When confronted by police about the allegation, the driver said the woman was asking to be assaulted because she dared to wear a tank top without a bra.

Beyond these cases, Uber also has to live down the 2014 Uber France promotion in which it offered 20-minute rides with attractive female drivers with a tagline asking, “Who says women don’t know how to drive?”

Here is the promotional video that Uber is using to announce the hiring initiative:
